What is private health insurance?
Private health insurance allows you to receive medical care when you need it. You might consider private healthcare because the waiting times for medical services in the public sector are unreasonably long or you are required to do so by Spanish authorities to obtain your residency (or visa). Whatever the reason, securing health insurance in Spain doesn’t have to be complicated. We work with a range of medical insurance companies to provide you with complete medical assistance; specialist consultations at a time that’s convenient for you and inpatient care in private hospitals with your own private room and flexible visiting hours.
How does private health insurance work?
When we face unexpected challenges in life, immediate diagnostics and prompt treatment are very important. With private health insurance, you get help earlier and start getting better sooner. You will be able to book an appointment with any medical professional in the hospital directory, just by using your medical card that you will receive at the beginning of your cover. Medical staff will identify you and charge the insurance company directly, there will be no co-payments with our health plan.
Advantages of Private Health Insurance
- Access to pioneering technology in medical diagnostics and to the latest renowned treatments.
- Large choice of private healthcare professionals from the medical directory.
- Specialist consultations are covered and do not require a referral from a GP.
- Immediate access to medical specialists and private hospitals from the first day of cover.
- Basic dental cover with checkups, extractions and annual dental cleaning.

We have created Insbrok by fusing Spanish insurance brokerage traditions and top relocation consultancy experience to offer you exactly what you need. Our services are always evolving and we always find the best options in the ever-changing health insurance industry.
Should I choose an agent or an independent broker for my health insurance?
Finding the best health insurance policy can be challenging, what with there being a wide range of insurers and products to choose from. As an independent health insurance broker, we’re not biased towards one provider’s policy over another.
An insurance agent would only be able to advise you on their own products and not the entire market, which is one of the advantages of using a specialist broker. At Insbrok, we work with all the insurers within the industry, so you’ll get unbiased and independent advice every time.
We are available all year round to offer support with any potential issues you may come across. With a devoted team of experienced professionals, there is no need to worry about being transferred from department to department. You can always contact us directly through our support email.
The volume of business that we place gives us access to competitive prices and industry leading policies that we can offer with waived waiting periods for Insbrok clients.
Insbrok is a local company with a national reach; we have helped people from all over the world find private medical insurance in Spain.
Can I switch health insurance providers?
You should have hassle-free health insurance. Our health insurance specialists will review your policy regularly to ensure that you still have the best possible cover, and if for any reason you are not happy with your current health insurance provider or policy, we will help you switch to another insurer.
What about co-payments?
A large amount of health insurance policies in the Spanish market are available with co-payments, also referred to as copays. Co-payments mean that each time that you as a patient access a medical service, you will have to pay a certain amount for it. It is important to mention here that, despite how big or small this amount is, health plans with co-payments will be rejected by Spanish authorities when applying for a Spanish residency or visa.
At Insbrok we only offer top tier health plans that will qualify for Spanish visa and residency applications. Your health plan from Insbrok will not have a copay and there will be no deductibles.
I have a health condition. Can I still take out Spanish health insurance?
Private health insurance plans are intended to cover clinical or health complaints which develop when the policy is already in place, as opposed to those conditions the patient already has. But if you have a pre-existing condition, there are still options for private health cover and in many cases, the insurer will accept your application.
Most health insurance plans do not cover pre-existing medical conditions, defined as any illness for which you have had symptoms or received any consultations, medication, surgery, or any other treatment in the past. Finding an insurer that will provide you cover depends on your health condition.
What is classed as a pre-existing condition?
Some of the conditions which fall into these categories include cancer, high blood pressure, asthma, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Additionally, it could include conditions for which the individual has received medical treatment for previously, or an ordinary illness that occurs often, like back pain for example.
Nonetheless you can get private health insurance regardless of whether you have pre-existing condition but depending on the condition or its seriousness, insurers may not compensate for its treatment or for any connected ailment.
If you suffer from a pre-existing medical condition and need affordable private health insurance, it will be more challenging to find a high quality health plan provider.
Can I use my private health insurance plan when travelling abroad?
While the private health plan is intended to cover you in Spain, the health insurance policies that we offer will also insure you for travelling as long as the duration of travel does not exceed 90 days.
The cheapest international health insurance would cost you approximately four times the price of Spanish health cover.
