How does the healthcare system in Spain work? How does private insurance fit in?

Spain does have a public healthcare system (Sistema Nacional de Salud; SNS) for its citizens, however, not all residents are eligible, so private healthcare plays a critical role.

It takes several months after you move to Spain to become eligible for the SNS, so until then you will need a private plan. However, many expats actually prefer private coverage or a combination of both private and public. This is because there are many additional benefits to private coverage that the public system does not support. Some of these benefits include reduced wait times, additional coverage in areas such as dental and eye care, and direct access to specialists and doctors that speak your native language. Here at Gidea we set our clients up with an insurance plan that ensures they are covered from day one.
