España con Erin: Healthcare in Spain

According to the World Economic Forum for 2019, Spain has the #1 ranked healthcare system in the world!

Spain’s healthcare is free and universal, and according to WHO is ranked 7th in the world. They rank 24th overall in cost per person, the lower the rank the better.

To become insured you have to have a social security number. Generally this means you have to work for a company or become self employed.

If your home country also has universal health care, you may be able to get your country to pay Spain to cover you. There is specific paperwork you need to fill out to accomplish this.

If you plan on going back and forth between Spain and your home country, you may want to keep the healthcare you already have. If this is your circumstance, it is recommended to just purchase additional health or travel insurance.

If you have a Certificado de Empadrionamiento, you have the right to emergency care in any public hospital. Healthcare cards are required in order to access healthcare in Spain. If you are not registered or do not have a card, you can only access the emergency room in event of an accident or serious illness.

To get the healthcare card, you have to be registered to and join the social security system.

Some friendly reminders!

You don’t have to be a legal resident to access healthcare. You need to be registered to have non-emergency assistance. You have the right to request accommodative services, such as an interpreter.

Public healthcare can be a great option for emergencies, but usually to get scheduled appointments there are extremely long waiting lists. Private healthcare can help you with not only current sicknesses but also prevention from any new ones.
