What is an NIE number and is it necessary to have one before moving to Spain?

A NIE number, which stands for Número de Identificación de Extranjero, is an identification number given to foreigners. An NIE number is only required for anyone staying in Spain for over 90 days. It is for any and all economic or bureaucratic activity within the country, including work and study. It is tied to your residence, but the NIE alone does not allow you to legally reside in Spain.

While you will need to acquire an NIE for long-term stays, Gidea is able to assist you with only your passport number. A legal or relocation advisor can help you get your NIE once you’re in Spain.
